I'm so over "Jess not wanting to go to the carnival with Rory is proof he was a bad boyfriend" or "This is proof that he just stopped trying after he got her." Jess has serious social anxiety and it makes sense why he wouldn't be so interested in going to the stupid town things when he's a total outcast in the town. He went to meet Emily when he didn't want to for Rory (even though it didn't go well) and even agreed to go again, he would go to Lane's band practice with Rory, they talked about going on dates we just never got to see it, they started having movie nights and he was making more plans for other movie nights, he wanted to take Rory to prom even though he wouldn't be particular interested in going to prom and was upset he couldn't get the tickets, he went to Kyles party with Rory even though he was upset about not going to graduate or being able to take Rory to prom. Was he perfect as a boyfriend? No, but can we stop with the narrative that "he just stopped trying." There's also the flip side of this where Luke also tells Lorelai not to get used to him going to the town things with her after they got together but this is supposed to show Jess was the worst boyfriend?! Luke and Jess both hated the stupid town things, but no one ever here is over here saying "oh this is proof Luke was a bad boyfriend." Luke and Jess both have their flaws for sure, but it definitely makes sense for both of their characters to not really want to be involved with the town events.
